Boosting AFP Material Efficiency with Fiber Patch Placement: A Blueprint for Realizing Complex Fiber Composites in Aerospace at Low Cost

Aerospace compenent manufacturers using AFP processes often suffer from scrapping high amounts of virgin material as left-overs at bobbin changes, translating into considerable economical losses of up to € 500,000 per year and AFP unit. Premium Aerotec and Cevotec, pursuing a sustainable alternative, worked on using Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) technology to repurpose the material to build new parts: complex components on which other automated composite processes failed in the past. This session presents their solution to use left-over AFP material in Cevotec’s FPP systems process to produce a challenging aerospace part, resulting in a weight reduction of 70% and a cost reduction of 75% compared to the currently flying version of the part. It serves as a blueprint for similar aerospace components and has the potential to save millions of Euro in material cost for the industry.
