Innovative Methods & Technologies for Repair of Wind Turbine Rotor Blades

90 000 Wind turbines are installed, only in Europe. Every rotor blade needs to be repaired every 5 years in average, which leads to more than 50 000 blades per year. Most of the blades can be repaired in a vertically hanging position, without demounting them from the wind turbine. But the repairs need certain temperature and humidity conditions, which are only given at a limited number of days per year. Long curing cycles of the repair materials must be considered, so that the overall repair output is far too small in order to meet the market demand.
A new weather protected repair platform from WP Systems allows for the first time to access damaged areas in a workshop-like environment. The platform works like a climatic room, that can be rain sealed at almost any part of the rotor blade. Long curing cycles belong to history, as a new and innovative repair kit from structrepair and New Era Materials allows structural repairs in less than an hour instead of former 8 hours. Both technologies together lead to an increase of effectivity, which has the potential to initiate a new era of rotor blade repair, almost independent on the weather conditions. The structrepair kit is also ready for other applications, like composite boats or airplanes. Additionally, fast hot pressing technologies (Thermoset Sheet Forming - TSF), used by New Era Materials allowed to manufacture of multi-material composite structures used in weather protected repair platform from WP System.
